SERMI

FAQ:

SERMI is the European authority owner of the scheme aimed at accrediting, approving and authorising access to security-related vehicle Repair and Maintenance Information (RMI). The scheme was designed in compliance with the Regulation (EU) 2018/858, later updated by the Regulation (EU) 2021/1244 and represents an essential point of reference to guarantee transparency and high standards in the European automotive industry.

For SERMI, Security-Related Repair and Maintenance Information (RMI) includes the set of data, software programs, functions and services required to carry out repairs and maintenance correctly on factory-installed systems. These systems are designed to prevent thefts, block unauthorised uses and favour locating and recovering the vehicle, thus guaranteeing that every technical intervention is carried out in compliance with the strictest security standards.

The SERMI scheme mainly applies to light and commercial passenger vehicles that meet the Euro 5 and Euro 6 standards. The implementation of the system is based not only on the Regulation (EU) 2018/858, updated by the Regulation (EU) 2021/1244, but also on the directives established by the Regulation (EC) 692/2008, amended by the Regulation (EU) 566/2011. This way SERMI guarantees a high level of protection and uniformity when accessing critical information for security.

Access to the security information, based on the guidelines by SERMI, is reserved exclusively to workshops and their operators with a valid SERMI certificate. This conformity tool guarantees that only qualified and authorised personnel can operate on the vehicle security systems, helping maintain high security and reliability standards.

The SERMI certification is not mandatory for all workshops. It is required for the organisations that need to access the vehicle security information, for example to carry out operations such as programming electronic keys or reprogramming anti-theft control units. In these cases, having the certification guarantees compliance with the regulations in force and a high operating security standard.

The SERMI certificate is released by accredited certifying entities, known as CAB (Conformity Assessment Bodies). These organisations are in charge of verifying the conformity of the workshops and its operators with the standards and procedures required by the scheme. For further details on the certification process see the official page www.vehiclesermi.eu/req.html

Even if both require an authentication process, the SERMI certification and the TEXA protected diagnosis meet different needs. The SERMI certification allows accessing, in the manufacturer portals, the information related to vehicle security systems, such as programming electronic keys and managing anti-theft control units, which are essential to prevent thefts. Instead, the TEXA protected diagnosis allows accessing advanced diagnostic functions, protected by security mechanisms such as the Secure Gateway or similar technologies, for a complete and detailed check on the vehicle systems.

The SERMI certificate is valid for 5 years. In order to obtain it, you must go through a procedure that includes an initial documentation inspection, followed by an on-site check carried out by a CAB (Conformity Assessment Body) inspector.

Yes, of course. TEXA concluded an agreement with KIWA on a European level. Access your myTEXA account to discover your reserved sales conditions. From the same page you can also directly request the certification. The advantages are reserved to customers with an active TEXPACK subscription.

To access a manufacturer portal with the SERMI authentication, you must register the certificate, only once, using the Digidentity Wallet app installed on your smartphone. After registering, to access a manufacturer portal, follow these steps:

  • Open the Digidentity Wallet app
  • Select the “Scan a QR-code” button
  • Scan the QR-code displayed in the manufacturer portal
  • Enter your 5-digit pin
  • Select “Log in”

Now you are authenticated and can access the vehicle security information.

To enable a SERMI-certified operator remotely for assistance:

  • Open the Digidentity Wallet app
  • Enter your 5-digit pin
  • Select your SERMI certificate in the Digidentity Wallet app
  • Select “Create new authorisation”
  • Share the authorisation link with the Remote Service Supplier Employee (RSSE).

Once the remote operator receives the link, he/she can access the portal and give the requested assistance within the period of validity of the authorisation. This authorisation is valid for 24 hours.
